poetry slam

I never got into the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe. I think out of all of his poems, I only liked the Raven. I understand he had a harsh life but his poetry was about nothing but death and chaos, or the loss of someone. I just feel like poetry shouldn't be too dark and gloomy to be considered poetry.
